When you are involved in an accident, you should obtain certain information at the site of the incident.
- You should take the contact details of any witnesses to the accident
- take or get someone to take photographs of the accident
- If the driver has no insurance, leaves the scene or admits to driving a stolen vehicle the Police should be contacted immediately
Your solicitor will need to know certain information such as the following and any evidence of this will support your case:
- The direction you were travelling in;
- The time of day and weather and road conditions;
- Whether there was anyone else in the car with you or with other persons involved in the accident;
- Whether there were any witnesses;
- The make and registration numbers of all vehicles involved
- Who you believe is responsible for the accident and why
- What happened immediately before and after the accident
- Whether the police were called and if not why not – if they were the name of the force and the officer who attended
- Whether you are comprehensively insured and the amount of excess payable on your policy; and
- Whether you are the owner of the car and details of the owner if you are not.
You will also need to provide your solicitor with information regarding the injuries sustained and medical evidence will be required. Photographs of your injuries are also useful. Any expenses you incur relating to you accident should be noted and any receipts retained so that you may be reimbursed for them.
